Ashley Sarah Brown

I was born in 2002 in Johannesburg, South Africa. I am currently in second year
BA Fine Arts at the University of the Witwatersrand. I developed a passion for
art at an early age from my grandfather. I belong to a generation of post-
apartheid artists who address issues such as gender-based violence, racism,
sexism, personal matters, and mental health. I have been exploring multiple
different mediums and techniques over the past year and a half. I have not yet
exhibited. I plan to move to Cape Town to become a gallery curator.

Artist's Statement

I am interested in working with charcoal and the practice of drawing. I feel that
I have a connection to charcoal and its process of going from a living thing to
being burnt and then used to make marks. I have worked with the unusual
medium of gunpowder several times and have developed a personal process
when it comes to that. I am currently exploring oil paint and portraiture. I have
worked with themes of sexual assault, death, dementia, and personal mental
health. I use my art as a form of catharsis and a way of working through
personal issues that also speak towards societal issues.
